This and all other contests and events sponsored by the Optimist club of Frederick are open to youth in the Frederick County, Maryland vicinity.  If you are outside the Frederick County, Maryland area please check with your local Optimist Club for Optimist activities in your area. A list of Optimist clubs can be found on the Optimist International Web site, www.optimist.org.

Photo Release: The Optimist Club of Frederick uses photos of events to let the residents of Frederick County know the accomplishments of area youth.  In addition these photos may be used as parts of press releases, on www.frederickoptimist.org, the Frederick Optimist's web site, and in other publications to let Frederick County youth know the opportunities available to them through the Optimist Club. 

Please include a copy of the photo release form - Youth   (This release is not required to enter or win.  Pictures taken may be used on the clubs web site and/or in newspaper announcements)

20th Annual Youth Talent Show Competition Rules

1.        There will be four (4) separate categories of competition:  Dance, Instrumental, Vocal and Dramatic Monologue.  Dance does not include gymnastics or baton twirling.   All category works performed must be a published work, not an original piece written by the student of someone else.   Proof of publications should be brought to the audition.  Material chosen must be appropriate for an audience of all ages.  Adult content, language or situations must be avoided.  Material selected must be age appropriate for the student performer.  The judges are the official identifiers of adult content, language or situations.   All judges decisions are final.

2.        Auditions will be held for each category at Ballenger Creek Middle School on Saturday, April 1, 2006 beginning at 9am.  Each contestant will be required to participate.   No walk-in’s will be allowed on the morning of the auditions.

3.        Four finalists will be chosen from each respective category of competition in the Final Competition to be held on Saturday May 6, 2006, at Tuscarora High School, Frederick, MD  7:00pm.

4.        Presentations are to be no less than three (3) minutes and no more than five (5) minutes in length.

5.        Judging will be by expert, professional instructors and artists in each category. 

6.        Each contestant may compete in only one (1) of the areas listed in the Final Competition: however, students may audition for two categories.  Application must indicate 1stand 2nd  choice when auditioning for more than one category of competition.

7.        Costumes may or may not be worn by contestants but these will not be considered in the judging of any performance.  Stage props must be kept to a  minimum and easily moved.

8.      Application’s must be postmarked by March 1, 2006.

 Awards:

 Prizes will be awarded to all competitors in the Final Competition, one will receive the Grand Prize: a $1,500 U.S. Savings Bond inclusive of the first place prize in their category.  First place winners of remaining categories will each receive an $800 U.S Savings Bond, all other competitors will each receive a $250 U.S. Savings Bond.

 Clarification of Rules:

 1.        Competition is restricted to students enrolled in any middle school in Frederick County, grades 6,7,8 and between the age of 10-14 as of May 1, 2006.
2.        Each application must have the signature of the arts instructor/teacher indicating the students achievement in a performing art.
3.        Only individuals will be allowed to compete:  no groups are eligible for competition.
4.        Each contestant is responsible for providing musical accompaniment (CD or piano), when applicable.   No cassette’s will be allowed.
5.        Verification of age and enrollment in a middle school in Frederick County will be requested.
6.        Previous Grand Prize winners are not eligible to enter subsequent competitions.
7.      Individual category prize winners are ineligible to compete in the same category in subsequent competitions.

Judging Criteria:

1.Personal Qualities (Appearance, Poise, Personality)        25 Pts
2.Performance (Interpretation, Perfection )      50Pts
3.Overall Effectiveness (Appeal, Impression, Effect)   25 Pts
4.Penalties: Eight (8) points penalty for each 15 seconds, or portion thereof, over or under prescribed time limits.  (To be assessed from judge’s score)
