Congratulations! You have been selected as the 2003 "Outstanding Young Person of the Year" in Frederick County, Maryland, by the Optimist club of Frederick, Inc.  Four Frederick County youth received letters that started like this. The Frederick Optimist's received almost thirty applications for the 2003 Youth Appreciation Week Scholarships. With so many marvelous applications the choice of who got these letters was a hard one for this years judges.  

The Optimist Club of Frederick, Inc. would like to thank all the youth of Frederick County that spend so much time giving back to their community. As the profiles below show the 2003 winners are outstanding youth.

RELIGIOUS DENOMINATION ACTIVITIES:

  •  Through my childhood/teen years I was a member of Frederick Community Church, a non-denominational bible believing church until our pastor moved and we merged with Frederick Christian Fellowship 3 years ago.

  •  While at Frederick Community Church I purchased and wrapped Christmas gifts for all the city children that rode our bus to church and was a member of The King’s Kids, our youth group.

HOME RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • My home responsibilities are shared between my mother and I, as we are currently the only ones in our household

  • I am informed and assist on decisions for all household responsibilities. 

  • My mother works long hours so I clean the house, do the laundry, do the grocery shopping, take out the trash, etc. 

  • I also work as a Gymnastics Instructor at the YMCA, teaching classes as well as giving private lessons for supplemental income.

Middletown Food Bank; Middletown Valley People Helping People and the New York City 911 Firefighters Relief Fund. Myersville Volunteer Fire Company -see Frederick News Post Sunday. October 12. 2003 for coverage);

  • hosted a foreign exchange student from France during the summer of 2002: 

  • Assisted Myersville Elementary School with their Plant a Row for the Hungry campaign by digging and planting vegetables as well as designing and building a fence - vegetables arc donated to Middletown Food Bank and Frederick Soup Kitchen.

 RELIGIOUS DENOMINATION ACTIVITIES:

  • Youth Representative on the St. James Catholic Church Parish Council in Boonsboro; 

  • plan and organize events for the youth of St. James including youth masses: 

  • designed. planned and implemented a Plant a Row for the Hungry youth garden; currently I maintain the garden and donate vegetables to the Middletown Food Bank.

HOME RESPONSIBILITIES and WORK EXPERIENCE

  • As the eldest of five children in the family; I am expected to set a good example and act as a role model for my brothers and sisters; 

  • I am responsible for my younger siblings when they return from school if my mother is at a substitute teaching job:

  • On nights when my dad is teaching (he teaches 8th grade during the day and high school students on Tuesday & Thursday evenings) I am responsible for insuring that my siblings have done their homework (also helping them in geometry and algebra) and assisting my mom with evening chores; 

  • Started my own lawn mowing business (McCarrick Brothers Lawn Service) in summer of 2000 and have cut lawns during the spring. summer and fall ever since this time: 

  • delivered flyers for Ross's General Store in Myersville from 1998-2000: 

  • Employed at Ross's General Store as a clerk and assistant since May 2003.
