HOBYThe Optimist Club of Frederick, Inc. supports the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) program in its effort to recognize and develop leadership potential in high school sophomores. Each year the Optimist Club of Frederick provides scholarship assistance to Frederick County youth wishing to attend HOBY.

Hugh O'Brian founded Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY)  in 1958 after he had the unique opportunity to spend time with the great humanitarian, Dr. Albert Schweitzer at his clinic in Africa. During this meeting Dr. Schweitzer impressed upon Mr. O'Brian that "the most important thing in education is to teach young people to think for themselves." Two weeks after returning from Africa Mr. O'Brian used this thought as the foundation for the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership program.

Since then it has been HOBY's mission to:

HOBY implements its mission in three ways:

"The goal of the HOBY seminar is to provide the high school students with a stimulating learning forum on the American incentive system and the democratic process, while broadening their understanding of their leadership potential and quest for self-development. The program is provided free to each and every student, and that's only possible because of people like you - our civic clubs, corporations and private individuals across Maryland - believe in our collective future and want to equip our next generation with the knowledge and the skills they'll need to grow into leaders."

Carol Applegate
MD HOBY Seminar Chair

The Frederick Optimist are proud sponsor ambassadors to HOBY as  HOBY's leadership seminars prepare Frederick Country high school sophomores to become effective, ethical leaders in their homes, schools, workplaces and communities.
