This contest is open to students living or attending school in Frederick County Maryland only.

Who:  The contest is open to students under age 19 as of December 31 of the 2004-2005 school year. Student must be a resident of Frederick County, Maryland or attending school in Frederick County, Maryland

How To Enter:  Interested students submit essays on the pre-assigned topic to their local Optimist Club. The essays are judged at the Club level, District level and at the international level.

This and all other contests and events sponsored by the Optimist club of Frederick are open to youth in the Frederick County, Maryland vicinity.  If you are out side the Frederick County, Maryland area please check with your local Optimist Club for Optimist activities in your area. A list of Optimist clubs can be found on the Optimist International Web site, www.optimist.org.


Please include a copy of the photo release form - Youth   (This release is not required to enter or win.  Pictures taken may be used on the clubs web site and/or in newspaper announcements)

Photo Release: The Optimist Club of Frederick uses photos of events to let the residents of Frederick County know the accomplishments of area youth.  In addition these photos may be used as parts of press releases, on www.frederickoptimist.org, the Frederick Optimist's web site, and in other publications to let Frederick County youth know the opportunities available to them through the Optimist Club.

Purpose:  This contest is to give young people the opportunity to write about their own opinions regarding the world in which they live. The approach can encompass a young person’s personal experience, the experience of their country or a more historical perspective. The topic selected each year is intended to give young people the room to develop their own views around a central idea. In addition to the opportunity for written expression, participants have the opportunity to win a college scholarship of up to $5,000! Each year, more than 1,000 Clubs participate in this contest. 

Length: 400-500 words (Title, footnotes and bibliography are not included in the final word count.)

Prizes:

Club level - medallion and a $100 saving bond.

Club Prizes - Essay Clubs are now allowed to give monetary awards of up to $500 for the Essay contest in addition to the official medallions. The Club level awards may be given in the form of a scholarship, savings bond or cash prize but are completely discretionary. 

District level - plaque and a $650 college scholarship for first place winners. 

International level - scholarships. 

First-place: $5,000 college scholarship, expense-paid trip for student and parents to Optimist Convention for a reading of the winning essay, plaque presented by the Optimist  International President.

Second-place: $3,000 college scholarship, winner’s plaque

Third-place: $2,000 college scholarship, winner’s plaque
