Optimist Club of Frederick
Childhood Cancer Campaign

Optimist Club of Frederick, Inc. Frederick Md |
During the next year approximately 12,000 children will be diagnosed with cancer. Before reaching 20 years of age one in every 330 Americans will develop cancer. Because of these alarming statistics Optimist International has designated the Childhood Cancer Campaign as a priority project for all Optimist Clubs. The Optimist Club of Frederick is proud to be a participant in the campaign. As part of this effort, the Optimist Club of Frederick is joining other Maryland / South Delaware Optimist Clubs in support of a project begun by the Optimist Club of Timonium. Timonium Optimists have created a foundation to support the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Believe in Tomorrow House. The Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at John Hopkins is the home of their Division of Pediatric Oncology. While treating young patients the doctors and nurses have found that having the child's family as part of the team aids in recovery. However, many of the patients and their families are not from the Baltimore area and the cost of staying with their child can be enormous. The Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center and John Hopkins have found a friend in Maryland / South Delaware Optimists. They can call on the Maryland/South Delaware District Optimist Childhood Cancer Campaign Foundation when they have a family in need. Optimists will be there with a phone card to call home, money for groceries, a parking voucher or gas money; whatever is needed. The Optimist Clubs of Maryland / South Delaware want to enable families to focus on their child and his/her treatment, not the problems of being away from home. Maryland / South Delaware Optimists are also providing support for the "Believe in Tomorrow's Children's House at St. Casimir's". St. Casimirs, a former convent, is being renovated into 8 studio apartments. These apartments will be available for use by families whose children are undergoing bone marrow transplants that can last anywhere from 60 to 120 days. Located on Baltimore's waterfront, St. Casimirs will allow families to assist in the treatment and recovery of their childern. While at St. Casimirs families will be able to focus on their children knowing that Optimists are there to help. |
Mary Ellen Hoffman, President of Frederick Optimists, is shown presenting a $1,000 check for use in the Childhood Cancer Campaign to Bill Leizear of the Maryland / South Delaware District.
